My areas of passion include supporting the LGBTIQA+ community and working with trauma. I can assess cognitive, adaptive functioning and learning difficulties across the lifespan. Touchstone Therapies mind-body connection

The “mind-body connection” is a term used to describe the relationship that our thoughts, feelings and behaviours can have on our physical health and vice-versa. Simply put, our chemistry and biology impact our emotions and mood, as well as thoughts and beliefs.  These factors play a significant role when it comes to stress and physical health. It also means that sometimes, traditional talk therapy simply is not enough.

I will work with you to ensure that our therapeutic approach is holistic, unique and in line with YOUR needs. This may involve using Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT), Acceptance Commitment Therapy (ACT), Dialectal Behavioural Therapy (DBT) and/or further exploration into any underlying traumas that your body may be unconsciously storing. We can also explore sensory integration to calm your central nervous system and determine strategies to increase or decrease your levels of arousal as required.

Trauma & EMDR therapy

When we experience trauma, it’s like our brain takes a screenshot of the sensory input we are receiving at the time. It layers this with the negative thoughts we may have about ourselves in that moment (such as “I am unlovable”, “I am shameful” or “I am broken”). Our brain then uses this screenshot of historical trauma as a lens that we use to perceive and interpret current day events.

Our brain is the super-computer that controls all our body’s reflexes as well as thoughts and behaviours. Our brain’s screenshot of historical trauma therefore extends to our physical levels of arousal that we experienced during the traumatic event. When we experience something that reminds us of the trauma (i.e., a smell, sound or thought) we are “triggered” and our body snaps back into the heightened distress it experienced during the initial trauma. This also means that our bodies tend to subconsciously store that trauma through hyper vigilance and somatic symptoms such as muscular aches, insomnia, headaches, tension and fatigue.

Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) is a phenomenal mode of therapy that allows the individual’s brain and body to finally release and resolve trauma. EMDR uses bilateral eye movements to transfer the traumatic memory from our limbic system (fight, flight freeze headquarters) into our prefrontal cortex (thinking brain) where we gain a new perspective on the event and are desensitized to the trauma. This development allows our brain to logically and rationally processes the event without the accompanying distress. The knowledge that we are neither at fault, broken nor shameful – travels from our mind to our core being and we finally release the trauma, can heal and file that memory away in the past where it belongs.

I currently accept referrals through Mental Health Care Plans, private health insurance, no claiming options, NDIS self-managed or plan managed participants. Please note that I am unable to accept NDIA managed participants.

Mental Health Care Plans: To access a MHCP, book a long appointment and have a chat with your GP to let them know your concerns. They will then fax a MHCP to me which will give you a rebate of $92.90 for up to 10 sessions per calendar year.

Private Health Insurance: You don’t need a GP referral to see me under Private Health Insurance. I do recommend you speak to your private health insurance provider to see if psychological services are covered in your plan and how much the rebate is. Compare their rebate to the $92.60 from a MHCP and see which option is financially beneficial for you.

WorkCover: I am registered to work with individuals under WorkCover claims. You will just need to have a chat to your GP and WorkCover case manager to obtain a referral to see me.

NDIS: I can accept Self-Managed and Plan Managed participants. Please bring your NDIS plan, plan manager details and other documentation that you think is relevant for me to know.

No claim option: I can absolutely accept clients without referrals or claiming options, however – I would prefer to explore the above options with you before you come in to ensure you are accessing any rebates and financial support you may be entitled to!
